Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder

The garter snakes are coming out of our rock foundation this spring and I'm happy about it.
I hadn't seen them for the last couple of years and I wondered what had happened. Was it putting in the pivot and changing the landscape? Was it the construction on the house?
Was Charlee harassing them? Was it global warming? Was it something I said?
I used to think it was freaky that snakes wintered in our foundation even though they never came in where human habitation was. But when they disappeared I felt badly. I guess I'm honored that we can provide a wintering place for our helpful little wild friends.

Was it something you said? That's funny.

Fran, I think you're so sweet. You are one of the only people I know that are just so happy that the snakes are back.

I saw a program on Animal Planet called "Jane Goodall's Animal Heroes." One of them was a fifteen year old boy whose love of rescuing animals led him to the interesting discovery that garter snakes actually choose mates and stay with those mates. The pair in the picture reminded me of that. So, maybe it wasn't something you said; maybe they were just on their honeymoon.

Ahh...snakes on their honeymoon - how cute! I wonder who caught the "garter" ;)
